Center for Abused Persons Provides Vital Assistance to Charles County’s Survivors From New Location

Charitable Trust Staff and Board members recently attended a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate The Center for Abused Persons’ new location in White Plains. The Center for Abused Persons (CAP) provides support and services to individuals who have experienced domestic violence and sexual assault in our local community. They offer a range of resources, including a 24-hour hotline, counseling, legal assistance, and advocacy services. CAP aims to empower survivors by helping them navigate the challenges they face when experiencing abuse. Their new, larger office space will allow them to grow their reach and be more centrally located within the county.

The ribbon cutting was well attended by county Commissioners, Charitable Trust staff and board members, the Charles County Sheriff’s Department, Charles County Chamber of Commerce, CAP staff and board members, and other community supporters. CAP explains that this location allows for needed expansion in housing employees and providing a safe space where abuse survivors can seek assistance. It also offers their staff and volunteers closer proximity to the local hospital and county offices where they often conduct advocacy efforts, including assisting victims to file court orders, obtain necessary records, and work with law enforcement or medical professionals.

CAP is currently fundraising for two important initiatives that will improve services for Charles County victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. The first is to provide interpretation services for non-English speaking victims. Additional funding of $10,000 on top of grants CAP has received from the Charitable Trust and other sources is needed to provide this vital service. Additionally, CAP is raising funds to hire Hospital Outreach Advocates to work weekends assisting victims at Charles Regional Medical Center. These Advocates will provide crisis intervention and advocacy services following traumatic events. This initiative will require $40,000 of funding for one year.
