Nonprofit Spotlight: Cornerstone Southern Maryland

Cornerstone Montgomery, a behavioral health nonprofit with more than 50 years of experience, has expanded its reach into Charles County and the surrounding region through its new regional branch, Cornerstone Southern Maryland. This expansion followed a 2023 merger with Southern Maryland Community Network, bringing more streamlined and accessible services to our area. Operating primarily out of its Calvert County location, Cornerstone Southern Maryland is a multifaceted organization that supports individuals through mental health care, crisis intervention, and vocational services. The Trust recently met with representatives to better understand these offerings—particularly those available to Charles County residents—and gained a deeper appreciation for how critical it is that the public knows where and how to access help.

Cornerstone’s Assertive Community Treatment program (ACT Team) serves the most vulnerable in Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary’s counties. The ACT Team, which consists of various providers, meet clients out in the community wherever they are. Cornerstone employees explain these services are for clients who are hardest to engage, but often the most urgently in need. Unhoused individuals or those who have disengaged from needed treatment (and will not or cannot come to a service location) can be met wherever they are. The ACT Team assesses the need for services and connects them with vital resources towards stability. Clients can be referred to the ACT Team through family members, a hospital, or treatment center.

Cornerstone Southern Maryland also offers in-person targeted case management, crisis intervention, a day program for children and adults, a residential mental health program for adults, and vocational services. They aim to expand on their services for at-risk youth in Southern Maryland though a program called “In-Home Intervention Program for Children,” or IHIP-C. This program delivers in-home behavioral healthcare for youth at risk of entering foster care, detention, or residential placement. IHIP-C promotes crisis stabilization, strengthened family bonds, and skill building to keep families connected and stable. Through this and more, Cornerstone seeks to turn “risk into resilience.” The first step in achieving this is ensuring our local communities know where to find the help they need.
