Jamaur Law, a teacher with a background in marketing and finance, stumbled across a need in his own community when he realized his high school students lacked even a basic understanding of how to manage finances. This led him to create the Jamaur Law Foundation in 2018, a nonprofit with a goal to fill the gap in financial literacy among people of all ages in the DMV area. The Foundation has partnered with several school systems, including 3 Charles County schools to promote financial literacy, and also partners with businesses and nonprofits, such as Beyond the Classroom in Waldorf, to host community events. The Foundation’s efforts are customized to support all ages – youth, teens, and adults – with age-appropriate education addressing budgeting, shopping, managing finances and more.
In speaking with Jamaur Law about his mission and goals for his nonprofit, it is clear in a matter of minutes that he has a deep desire to help others however he can. In addition to his passion for improving financial literacy, he uses his nonprofit to provide food, school supplies, and new shoes to low-income families. Jamaur Law Foundation also has multiple scholarship programs for high school students, and he has recently been approved as a provider for Charles County students to earn required service hours. The Foundation empowers high school students and college interns to assist with editing, printing, and distributing materials, as well as spreading awareness about the Foundation throughout the community.
Law expresses excitement and gratitude for a recent successful Shoe Drive event. He tells Charitable Trust Staff, “It’s about more than shoes. Having new shoes that fit well removes a small financial burden from the family, can prevent bullying, and give a kid comfort so they can run around and just be a kid.” He notes that small self-esteem builders like this can go a long way. Law hopes to do his next shoe drive in conjunction with kid-friendly education on responsible shopping for the Nanjemoy community. “They can learn to shop, and then take their new shoes home.”
When asked about his biggest need from the community, Law tells us his main goal is to increase connection and awareness about the Jamaur Law Foundation so he can grow his impact in areas that need it most. The Foundation accepts donations, but Law explains he prefers to rely on grants and several larger donors than to solicit donations from the communities the foundation serves. The Jamaur Law Foundation would love to connect with businesses, nonprofits, or individuals that would like to partner for financial literacy related events/programming.
